Parachutes Don't Work by Eleanor - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

On the first day of statistics, my teacher handed us a five-page paper concluding that parachutes do not significantly reduce injury or death when jumping from airplanes. When I got home, I read and re-read the paper searching for anything suggesting the data was somehow flawed. Even though logic tells us parachutes should decrease casualties in skydivers, I couldn't find anything wrong with the study. It wasn't until a discussion in class that my oversight was exposed. There, buried within the plethora of details and encumbered by extensive statistical vocabulary, was a sentence revealing the truth: the plane was grounded and stationary. Participants jumped from a height of approximately two feet to the ground. As you may imagine, the addition of a parachute is not likely to drastically change the health of subjects “skydiving” in such conditions. It wasn't that the study was wrong, they were simply answering a different question than what was advertised in the claim. Thus I realized unlike any math class I had taken before, success in Statistics was determined by questioning assumptions, interpreting evidence, and obtaining a true understanding of how data can represent the real world.
Before Statistics, I treated school as something separate from everyday life. My learning process up until this year was simple: study the material, take the test, and move on. Math being one of my favorite subjects, I took Statistics and Precalculus in the same year assuming each would be mild variations from the machine-like learning system I had adopted. It took me one day of class in Statistics to realize I would not be able to “learn it and leave it” as I had done in my previous classes. Unlike AP Precalculus, Statistics wasn’t a collection of practice problems, instead, it was a framework for understanding how data can accurately, or misleadingly, represent reality. I had never taken a class that demanded that level of inquiry, both in and out of school, and soon found that in order to succeed in this class, I had to construct the full picture while questioning each step of the process. Over time, I grew to know that when stepping into the Statistics classroom, I had to leave my initial mindset behind in order to succeed. As my early learning systems fell to ruin, my barriers separating school from the rest of my life did as well. Commercials on TV claiming 90% satisfaction in their customers and billboards showcasing brash statistics started sparking questions rather than acceptance. As I allowed these walls to fall, my performance in class improved in turn. I was able to recognize faulty tests and misinformation better because I had a greater understanding of how these errors could impact real people’s lives. But my change in mindset didn’t stop with statistics. Soon, I found myself investigating the ingredients in the fertilizer we used at home to see if we were contributing to eutrophication, a concept I learned in AP Environmental Science. I paid closer attention to the news, recognizing the ways the Dependency Theory from AP Human Geography shaped modern trade. Even the periodic functions I learned about in AP Precalculus began appearing in everyday phenomena. What started as a necessary adjustment quickly spilled over into everyday life. Statistics taught me to look past the given information, examining the circumstances in which it can be applied, questioning the systems from which it was derived, and eventually adapting my understanding of school concepts to better work as applicable knowledge.

I was supposed to notice the question the study was actually asking. The underlying questions within the numbers I learned to investigate were one of the most important things I learned from the course, and eventually my education as a whole. By adapting my method of learning, I am now able to get the most I can out of schooling, learning not just for the grade, but to take that learning, question it, and eventually apply it in my life. Though I initially struggled with Statistics, the perspective it gave me transformed the way I learn, helping me better understand the world (and, admittedly, why parachutes still matter).
