Building My Future Through Financial Literacy by Elannia - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
One skill I hope to master in the next few years is financial literacy. As a college student stepping into adulthood, I have come to understand that knowing how to manage money is just as important as earning it. Financial literacy is not something everyone is taught, yet it plays a major role in determining stability and long-term success. For me, mastering this skill represents more than just understanding numbers; it represents independence, security, and the ability to build a better future for myself.
My motivation to strengthen my financial literacy comes from my personal experience. As someone that is responsible for paying for my own college education, I have had to quickly learn the value of every dollar. There is a different level of responsibility that comes with knowing that your future depends on the decisions you make today. I do not have the option to be careless with money, and because of that, I have developed a strong desire to become more knowledgeable and intentional about my finances. I want to avoid unnecessary debt, build stability, and create opportunities for myself that were not always easily accessible.
To develop this skill, I plan to be proactive and disciplined. I will create and maintain a budget that allows me to track my spending and prioritise my needs over my wants. I also plan to consistently set aside money for savings, even during times when finances may feel tight, because I understand that discipline now will benefit me later. In addition, I will continue to educate myself on topics such as credit, investing, and financial planning. By using resources like financial literacy programs, online tools, and real-life practice, I will build a strong foundation that I can carry with me beyond college.
Mastering financial literacy is about more than personal success; it is about breaking cycles and creating new standards for myself. I want to be in a position where I am not just surviving, but thriving. By developing this skill, I am preparing myself to move through life with confidence, make informed decisions, and create lasting stability. Financial literacy will not only support my goals during college, but it will also empower me to build the future I know I am capable of achieving.
