A Key to Success: Learning the Student by Dylan - December 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I had the opportunity to run for student body president, my main goal would be to foster an environment that provides each student with the tools they need to succeed and ensure equal opportunities are available for all students. As a high school student, I see firsthand the different needs each student faces. Whether that be students with jobs, disabilities, athletic participation, or just an overall diverse schedule, it is apparent that each student has their own needs that differ from each other. You might ask, “How does one student president implement tools to succeed for all students?” The answer is simple: understanding each student. In order to meet each student's needs and provide them with tools for equal opportunities and success, it is apparent that faculty members learn and familiarize themselves with each student.
Students with disabilities need a diverse range of accommodations. As the vice president of Best Buddies, a club focused on inclusion for students with intellectual disabilities, I understand that although students may share the same disability, their needs are the same as the student next to them. To provide tools to induce equal opportunities for success, each teacher must learn to differentiate each student from the other, especially those with disabilities. Once teachers are successfully teaching their students the practice of providing tools of success will become easy.
Similarly to students with disabilities, students who participate in athletics also require a different set of accommodations, along with students who work. To allow for equal opportunities to succeed, each student who partakes in after-school programs and activities must also be provided with the tools to succeed. Knowing and understanding each student and their activities will allow teachers to help each student succeed. Although a lengthy task, it is most important that teachers learn from their students and foster an environment that will provide the tools for each student to succeed.
