From fear to confidence by donovan - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

One challenge that once felt overwhelming to me was public speaking. Even something as simple as presenting a project in front of my class made me nervous. I would overthink every word, worry about making mistakes, and feel uncomfortable being the center of attention. Before presentations, my hands would shake, and I would constantly rehearse in my head because I was afraid of embarrassing myself. At the time, speaking in front of others felt impossible to master.
What changed was not one single moment, but a gradual shift in my mindset and experience. I realized that avoiding public speaking only made my fear stronger. Eventually, I started forcing myself to participate more in class discussions, group projects, and presentations. At first, I still felt nervous, but each experience helped me gain a little more confidence. I began to understand that most people were not focused on judging me; they were simply listening to what I had to say.
Another thing that helped me was preparation. I learned that confidence often comes from being prepared and knowledgeable about the topic. Instead of memorizing every sentence, I focused on understanding the material and speaking naturally. This made presentations feel more like conversations rather than performances. Over time, I became more comfortable thinking on the spot and trusting myself.
I also changed the way I viewed mistakes. I used to think that one small error would ruin everything, but I eventually noticed that everyone makes mistakes while speaking, even teachers and professionals. The difference is that confident speakers continue without letting small slip-ups affect them. Once I accepted that perfection was unrealistic, the pressure I placed on myself became much smaller.
Today, public speaking is still something that challenges me occasionally, but it no longer feels impossible or intimidating. I can now present in front of classes, contribute to discussions, and communicate my ideas more confidently. The experience taught me that growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone. Challenges rarely become manageable overnight, but with practice, patience, and a willingness to improve, something that once felt terrifying can eventually become a strength.
