“Listening, Learning, Growing” by Donavan - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most important lessons I learned during high school was how to accept and learn from feedback. After the COVID-19 shutdown, I struggled to get back into the routine of being a student. When I returned to the classroom, I realized that the habits I had developed during online school were not helping me succeed the way I wanted to. My teachers gave me feedback about my schoolwork and encouraged me to find better ways to study. My family also helped me recognize where I needed to make changes and encouraged me not to give up.

At first, it was not always easy to hear that I needed to change. But with the support of my teachers and family, I began to understand that feedback was not criticism. It was an opportunity to improve. I started listening more carefully to my teachers, trying different ways of studying, and creating better habits. My family reminded me to stay patient with myself and keep working even when I felt frustrated.

These experiences changed the way I approach learning. I became more willing to accept advice, make adjustments, and keep trying when something did not work the first time. The feedback I received from my teachers and family helped me become a better student, but it also helped me grow as a person. I learned that becoming better does not mean already having all the answers. It means being willing to listen, recognize what you need to change, and have the persistence to keep moving forward.
