From Fear to Confidence by Dolapo - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

A challenge I once found intimidating was speaking in front of groups. Earlier in my life, I was comfortable working hard behind the scenes, but the idea of presenting my thoughts publicly or leading discussions made me nervous. I worried about making mistakes, forgetting what to say, or being judged. Because of that, I often stayed quiet even when I had valuable ideas to contribute.
What changed was realizing that confidence is built through action, not by waiting to feel ready. I began taking small opportunities to speak up in class, participate in group discussions, and volunteer for leadership roles. Each experience was uncomfortable at first, but every time I did it, the fear became smaller. I learned that people are usually focused on the message, not perfection.
Over time, I went from avoiding public speaking to embracing positions where communication mattered. Serving in leadership roles taught me how to organize ideas, connect with different people, and stay calm under pressure. I also discovered that preparation creates confidence. When I understand my topic and care about what I am saying, speaking becomes much easier.
Now, public speaking feels manageable because I no longer see it as a performance. I see it as an opportunity to inform, inspire, or contribute. The challenge did not disappear overnight, but consistent practice changed something that once felt intimidating into a skill I can continue to grow.
