I have worked in the emergency department for the last couple of years. I have seen and heard so many scary diagnoses and situations. Pursuing my degree in Radiologic Technology has exposed me to many medical conditions, but one experience piqued my curiosity the most. After my mom was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had thyroid removal surgery, I became interested in seeing how imaging helps doctors detect, diagnose, and treat these diseases. It started out as a personal concern for my mom's health and turned into a deep dive into me exploring anatomy, pathology, and diagnostic imaging.

To learn more, I did a research project examining the role of imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders. My research focused on how different imaging modalities contribute to identifying abnormalities. I compared the different types of tests and their strengths and limitations, including ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and nuclear medicine studies. I discovered that each method provides unique and different information that helps doctors make informed decisions.

This project deepened my understanding of both the science and the human impact of healthcare. Studying thyroid cancer allowed me to understand the medical side of things and connect it to a real-life experience that had affected my family. I gained a greater appreciation for the precision required in diagnostic imaging and the responsibility healthcare professionals have in supporting patients during vulnerable moments. The more I learned, the more I realized that medical imaging is not just about taking pictures. It's about providing answers, guiding treatment, and improving quality of life.

Most importantly, this experience reinforced my desire to become a registered radiologic technologist. It showed me how curiosity can transform personal challenges into opportunities for learning and growth. By exploring something that directly impacted my family, I was able to get a better understanding of healthcare and also strengthen my commitment to a career dedicated to helping others. This project reminded me that every image tells a story, and I look forward to playing a role in helping patients receive the care they need through accurate and compassionate diagnostic imaging.
