The Power of Perspective by desreiel - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
The study method that has had the greatest impact on my academic success is visual learning combined with memory games. Many people can read textbooks and catch on, or listen to the teacher read their lectures from PowerPoint, but for me it goes in one ear and out the other. I learned early on that I retain information much better when I can see it and turn it into something interactive and fun. This approach has been especially important as I balance a full-time job in healthcare while getting a degree in Radiologic Technology.
As a visual learner, I often use color-coded notes and pictures to break down everything. I find that being able to see it makes it more tangible for me. I create connections between things using pictures, symbols, and organized layouts. For example, when studying anatomy or radiographic positioning, I use labeled pictures to help me remember. I would hide/scratch out the answers and try to write them as much as possible on my own to see if it’s correct. Doing this was not only fun, but it started to click for me way faster. Seeing it visually allows me to understand it while also remembering important details.
In addition to visual learning, memory games have become one of my most valuable study tools as well as being hands-on. Flashcards don’t work for me; however, matching games and practicing quizzes to recall information quickly have benefited me the most. Turning studying into a game makes it less overwhelming. It also strengthens my long-term memory because I continuously go back to those games and quizzes to make sure I am retaining and not just memorizing. This method has helped me perform better on exams.
What makes this strategy so meaningful is that it has given me confidence as a student. Going back to school while working full-time has required discipline and commitment to better study habits. There are times when balancing work, with family and friends, and homework felt hard and was discouraging. By figuring out how I learn best and adjusting my study techniques accordingly, I have been able to do better in class while managing a busy schedule.
Visual learning and memory games have not only improved my grades but also changed the way I approach learning altogether. It’s about studying smarter and finding ways that work for me. As I continue my education and work toward becoming a radiologic technologist, these strategies will build my confidence and help me achieve my goals.
Ultimately, the greatest lesson I have learned is that everyone learns differently. Once I figured out my strengths as a visual learner and added memory games into my studying, my grades improved significantly and I started to understand the material. These techniques have helped me earn strong grades, stay motivated, and continue pursuing my dream of making a difference in healthcare.
