More Than the Right Answer by Delaney - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
Fractions. Basic operations. Elementary school concepts I thought I had mastered years before stared back at me from the page. I had walked into tutoring expecting help with Algebra I. Instead, I was confronted with the realization that I was performing at an elementary school level in several foundational skills. Years of disrupted learning during COVID had quietly followed me into middle school, leaving gaps I never knew existed until the work became difficult enough to expose them. I was trying to solve equations without the foundation beneath them. Later that year, I failed Algebra I. The grade was painful, but the way it changed my view of myself lasted much longer. Classmates called me a “dumb blonde,” and I laughed because admitting their words hurt was harder than pretending they did not. After hearing those words often enough, I began to wonder whether they were right.
After seventh grade, I transferred to a small private school and retook Algebra I. My teachers noticed when I hesitated and gave me room to ask questions without making me feel behind. I relearned the skills I had missed, earned an A, and moved into Geometry. More important than the grade, I began to enjoy mathematics again. I stopped rushing through assignments to prove I belonged and started paying attention to why each step worked. When I got a problem wrong, I no longer erased my work right away. Instead, I traced my thinking backward until I found where my reasoning had changed direction. Sometimes it was a simple calculation. Other times, it was a concept I had never fully understood. That process changed the way I thought. Instead of assuming I had failed, I learned to ask questions, look for patterns, and understand why I made mistakes. Every correction restored a small piece of confidence I had lost, and I realized that critical thinking was not about getting the right answer the first time. It was about learning how to find it.
After ninth grade, I transferred again, this time to a larger all-girls private school. As I started Algebra II, I believed I had finally caught up. I understood the lessons, trusted my teacher, and felt steady for the first time in years. Then, shortly before second semester, I was moved into the honors course. My new teacher handed me a worksheet to see where I was starting and kindly assured me that she did not expect me to know everything. When I handed it back only partially completed, I could tell she was surprised. I was stuck. Around me, other students immediately began working while I struggled to figure out where to start. Yet something in me had changed. I no longer saw confusion as proof that I did not belong. I saw it as the beginning of figuring out what I was missing.
The problems no longer followed the simple paths I had once loved. A memorized formula did not always lead to the answer, and my first attempt often failed. Like life, the problems became more complicated, and I had to learn to think differently instead of giving up. I realized that if I was always the smartest person in the room, I probably was not challenging myself enough. The rest of the year was difficult. I had to learn to embrace the challenge of mathematics again after believing I was finally “fixed.” I chose patience over speed, curiosity over certainty, and asking “Why?” instead of only asking “What?” Although I was determined to earn an A, I finished the course with a B. At first I was disappointed, but that grade mattered far less than the note my teacher left on my final paper: “Math and life are about reflecting and revising.” That sentence reminded me that learning is not measured by perfection. It is measured by the willingness to rethink, revise, and keep going.
This fall, I will begin my junior year after being accepted into my school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, where I will take DP Mathematics Standard Level alongside Higher Level courses in Biology, English Literature, and Global Politics. I know the work will become even more challenging, but I no longer expect difficult problems to have easy solutions. Mathematics has taught me much more than how to solve equations. It has strengthened my critical thinking by teaching me to slow down, question my assumptions, analyze my mistakes, and revise my thinking instead of giving up. I am no longer the girl who believed struggling meant she was not smart enough. I am the girl who knows that growth comes from reflecting, revising, and refusing to quit, even when the answer is not immediately clear. Those lessons have prepared me not only for IB mathematics, but for every challenge that comes after it.
