In high school, living with mild dyslexia clearly indicated I had a different learning style. I still take notes which are a little slow on the output but I take notes in lectures well and it helps me to read out loud when I review. Dyslexia often affects writing fluency and processing speed for written characters. Now that I am a freshman in college in Savannah, GA, another strategy I like is to find any lectures on video or recorded that I can listen to. Microbiology foundations are microbiology foundations and if the video is relevant to the key words or chapter, I will listen to someone lecture or explain it which helps me retain much better then reading.
When I have to write a paper, I use immersive reader to read back to me what I typed in case a verb tense is off or words are not clear when I hear it, I can update the draft. I can use text to speech on some of the work if it is online. If it is a paper handout or in the textbook, I draw pictures that help me connect terms to definitions. I break down work into smaller sections. It helps to stop and use another method so I do not get overloaded or overwhelmed. I kept all my high school Algebra and Biology notes because I knew I would be taking those classes in college and I can add new notes at the college level to build upon what I have already learned.
It can be an obstacle but little tricks like notes, drawings, listening to similar lectures or work with text to talk, I turned a potential obstacle into a personalized toolkit for lifelong academic success.
