Finding My Voice Through Technology - By Da'Shyla Buckles by Da'Shyla - November 2025 Scholarship Essay
Technology has changed the way I learn in the classroom in a really positive way, especially as someone who used to struggle with staying focused and speaking up. Having access to a Chromebook made a huge difference for me because everything thing I needed from homework, notes, tutorials, and research was all in one place. Instead of feeling lost or overwhelmed, I could keep track of my assignments and find the answers I needed without panicking. Using Canvas helped me stay organized, and it became a tool that made school feel less confusing and more manageable.
One moment that stands out was during English we were giving an assignment where I had to write an essay on growth mindset. Normally, big writing assignments make me nervous, but being able to use my Chromebook to look up examples, watch short videos, and take my time gathering ideas helped me understand what I wanted to say. Having those online resources right in front of me gave me confidence and helped me write something I felt proud of.
Technology has also helped me manage my ADHD. Using my headphones to listen to music allows me to eliminate distractions and stay focused on what is in front of me. The ability to pause and rewind lessons means I can learn at my own pace without falling behind or feeling embarrassed. Digital assignments help as well because I do not have to worry about losing papers or forgetting where something is located. When I can move at my own pace and stay organized, school feels less stressful and I feel more in control.
As a naturally shy person, technology has given me new ways to participate without feeling put on the spot. Using chat features, submitting written responses, and creating presentations through Google Slides help me express myself in ways that feel more comfortable for me. When I make a presentation, I can put my creativity into it and let my ideas shine, even if I do not want to stand in front of room full of people. Technology gives me a voice without making me feel watched or anxious.
My confidence has grown along with my skills. I started high school off to a challenging beginning and now I have a 3.1 GPA. A lot of that change came from having tools that help me stay organized, ask questions, and stay prepared. Being able to track assignments, upload my work, and read teacher feedback online helps me take responsibility for my learning. It also helps me outside the classroom, technology has allowed me to apply for scholarships, complete FAFSA on my own, and fill out college applications through the Go Center. Every time I complete something independently, I feel more ready for my future.
Technology has even helped me explore my dream career in business and fashion merchandising. I make mood boards through Pinterest, research how to start a small business, and watch fashion videos online. Through this, I learned that not many clothing brands focus on tall people, which inspires me to want to be the one who changes that. Seeing real examples online helps me believe that I can build something of my own one day.
Overall, technology has not just helped me in the classroom, it has helped me grow as a student, a creator, and a future entrepreneur. It has made learning easier, giver me confidence, and helped me discover what I am passionate about. It has taught me how to stay organized, stay focused, and believe in myself. Technology supported me in becoming the student I am today and the person I am working hard to become in the future.
