Moving is more than just a change of address; it's a significant life experience that shapes our identities and perspectives in profound ways. When I was 11, I experienced one of the most pivotal transitions of my life, relocating from my vibrant hometown in the Philippines to the remote town of Ketchikan, Alaska. This shift prompted a deep reflection on my experiences and fueled my quest for self-discovery.
Before the move, I naively envisioned that my new school and surroundings would closely resemble my life in the Philippines—familiar educational systems, social activities, and interactions. However, I quickly encountered stark differences. The language, customs, food, and even social norms felt foreign. The biggest hurdle I faced was in school, where my limited English proficiency left me feeling isolated and overwhelmed. I struggled to communicate effectively, which made it difficult to engage with my peers or participate in class discussions.
Fortunately, the school provided support programs that helped me navigate this challenging landscape. Gradually, I began to feel more comfortable with the language, slowly finding my voice amidst the noise of insecurity. With perseverance and the help of dedicated teachers, I transitioned from English Language Learner (ELL) support to a regular English class. However, this journey wasn’t entirely smooth; without the necessary assistance, I often fell behind, struggling to understand assignments or express myself clearly in writing.
Adapting to my new environment was essential. I actively sought out a teacher whose teaching style resonated with my learning needs and made me feel comfortable in the classroom. Their guidance proved invaluable, helping me grasp complex concepts and boosting my confidence in my English skills. As I built a foundation in the language, I began to make friends and forge connections. Shared experiences allowed me to bridge the gap between my past in the Philippines and my present in Alaska.
Despite my progress, I often felt a sense of exclusion, frequently grappling with the idea of belonging. I questioned my differences, constantly asking myself, “Why am I so different?” Those thoughts colored much of my middle school experience, a time when I was acutely aware of how others perceived me. However, as I entered high school, I began to find ways to embrace my authentic self. I learned that my differences were not a disadvantage but rather unique aspects of who I am.
Joining Filipino programs and activities was a significant step in maintaining my cultural identity. These connections allowed me to meet others who shared similar backgrounds and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and community. As I engaged with my culture, I felt a renewed sense of confidence in sharing my story.
Throughout my time in Ketchikan, my interests and passions evolved as I explored various hobbies and activities. I participated in sports, school events, and community gatherings, each experience enriching my understanding of myself and the world around me. Moving, while initially frightening, ultimately opened doors to new adventures and discoveries about who I am.
