Finding Courage Behind the Mask by Cristine - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

During the Covid-19 pandemic, schools shut down and learning became remote. While many people struggled with isolation, I found comfort in it. I did not have to leave my room, interact with other students, or show my face on a screen. At the time, I believed this comfort came from convenience, but it was actually rooted in insecurity. I lacked confidence in who I was, and the pandemic gave me an excuse to hide from others and from myself

When schools reopened for in-person learning in eighth grade, my insecurity followed me. I hid behind a mask, embarrassed of what was underneath. I struggled to make friends and often felt alone. My lack of confidence shaped how I approached others and how I viewed myself.

The moment I discovered a new strength in myself came at the start of my freshman year in August 2022. Entering high school felt like a fresh start, and for the first time, I chose to face my fears instead of hiding from them. I realized I had the courage to change. Rather than staying behind a screen or mask, I decided to show my authentic self and embrace my flaws. This decision marked a turning point in my life.

As I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, my confidence slowly grew. I joined clubs, formed a new group of friends, and began to feel secure in who I was. This profound courage led me to become the captain of my girls' golf team, a role I never would have imagined taking on before. Leading others showed me that confidence is built through action, not perfection.

This strength of courage has continued to influence my growth, especially in my journey toward becoming a nurse. I became the vice president of my school's health careers organization. enrolled in health-related courses and am currently volunteering at my local hospital. Working at such a fast-paced and high-pressure environment requires much courage, but it also confirms my passion for healthcare. Interacting with patients and medical professionals taught me the importance of empathy, resilience, and most importantly, courage in moments that matter.

If you had told my seventh-grade self about these achievements, I would not have believed you. Discovering my courage allowed me to open up, grow into leadership roles, and pursue my passion for healthcare. This strength of courage continues to guide me as I work toward my goal of becoming a nurse.
