If I Could Build Something For My Community I Would Build... by Clement - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

I would build an indoor basketball court for the kids in my community that don't have a place or anyone to socialize and play with. My community has constant construction but not much extracurricular activities, the people need activities more so than random houses that are slowly not being able to be purchased because it is out of peoples means. A place to gather is what a community needs and that has been lost as more and more land is being purchased to profit from rather than to build community for a region. The reason why I would build an indoor basketball gym--if I had the means to-- is because of my love for sports as a kid. Ever since the time I watched my first basketball game--which might have been the Houston Rockets vs. New York Knicks during the 2014-2015 season-- I took an interest in basketball, but I didn't get the chance to play until I came to the United States from Ghana. Basketball has been a means for me to alleviate my worry for certain things and I feel that my community needs something similar as well. Long time friends are built through connections and sports is an amazing gateway to these relationships.
