One academic topic that challenged me at first was psychology. While I was fascinated by concepts such as identity, behavior, and emotional development, I quickly realized that psychology is far more complex than simply understanding why people act the way they do.

A concept that especially challenged me was the idea of "social masks", the ways people present different versions of themselves depending on their environment. Initially, I viewed this concept as something that only applied to other people. However, as we discussed it in class, I began reflecting on my own experiences and realized that I had been doing the same thing. As one of the few Black students at my private school, I often felt pressure to present myself in ways that avoided stereotypes or helped me fit in. Connecting classroom concepts to my own life forced me to think more critically about identity and human behavior instead of accepting simple explanations.

Psychology also taught me to approach questions from multiple perspectives. There isn't always one correct answer; I learned to evaluate evidence, consider different viewpoints, and most importantly, understand how personal experiences shape people's thoughts and actions. These skills strengthened my thinking because they encouraged me to ask deeper questions instead of settling for easy conclusions.

That experience has had a lasting impact on my academic goals. It reinforced my desire to major in psychology and eventually combine it with my passion for writing. I hope to use both fields to create stories that help young people better understand themselves and the world around them. Most importantly, psychology taught me that critical thinking is about developing the curiosity to keep asking meaningful questions.
