The Power of Active Learning by Celine - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
The study skill that has benefited me the most would have to be active learning. I take the time to test myself, practice problems, and rewrite my notes in my own words instead of just reading what I've written. This allows me to understand the content rather than memorize it.
Repetition has also proven to be extremely useful when studying. I learn more when I study information over a couple of days in small study sessions rather than cramming. If I get a question wrong I make sure to learn why instead of just trying to memorize the right answer.
This strategy helped me greatly with my science classes because a lot of the topics build upon one another. Through trial and error, I learned that once you know why something is true, you can use that knowledge to answer different questions.
Active learning has helped me gain more confidence in myself as a student. If I don't understand something, I used to think that I would never learn it. But now I know that if I put in the time to practice and repeat things, I will be able to grasp the concept. Active learning helped me learn how to study for exams and become a better learner overall.
