Recovery Through Resilience by Catherine - May 2026 Scholarship Essay
Recovering from addiction was one of the most intimidating challenges I have ever faced. Learning how to live without mind-altering substances or unhealthy behaviors forced me to confront emotions and struggles I had avoided for years. The most difficult part of recovery has been learning to live by principles in a society where morals and values often feel broken. After spending over a decade believing that surrender meant weakness and quitting, changing my mindset was not easy.
Through recovery, I have developed the skills necessary to maintain a healthy and manageable lifestyle. I learned how to arrest the obsession that comes with active addiction and begin a journey of self-reflection, healing, and growth. I transformed from a frightened girl into a woman who is continuously evolving and becoming stronger every day.
In the beginning, I was desperate not only to change but also to commit fully to the work required for lasting recovery. I found a supportive community of women who empower me, encourage accountability, and remind me of my worth. Recovery helped me rediscover my morals, values, and purpose. Most importantly, I learned that surrendering is not a sign of weakness, but one of the greatest strengths a person can have.
