From Uncertainty to Strength by Casey - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

One challenge that one felt overwhelming but now manageable is learning how to cope with uncertainty and responsibility during a family crisis. In November, my dad suffered a severe brain injury that changed my family's life overnight. He spent months in the ICU, even now he is still unable to speak or walk on his own. At the beginning, I tried avoiding my true feelings about the situation and continue going as if nothing happened. I didn't know how to process the severity of what was happening, how to stay focused in school, or how to support my family while dealing with my own emotions.

What made this challenge especially difficult was the uncertainty. There was no clear answers about my dad's recovery and each day brought new discouraging information. Balancing schoolwork, responsibilities at home, my job, extracurriculars, and the emotional weight of the situation felt overwhelming. I often felt pressure to stay strong for my family, even when I was unsure of everything. Overtime, I started to realize I didn't have to carry this weight by myself. I thought I had to continue being as perfect as I could so that I wouldn't cause any more stress than needed. I leaned on my village and God to help fill the void I felt. Instead of focusing on everything that was going on around me, I focused on what I could do each day. I created structure in my routine, stayed committed to keeping my academics up, and found ways to support my family. As I adjusted, what once felt intimidating slowly became more manageable. The situation itself didn't become easier, but I become stronger and more capable of handling it.
