From Criticism to Curiosity by Camila - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

The first time I presented my project in front of my studio class for architecture, I expected to be praised for the things I had done correctly. However, what I received were questions instead. "Why did you put the entrance there?" "How did you come up with this design?" "How can this space better accommodate its users?" All the comments were seen as criticisms and all the questions proved my failure.

At the time, I thought that the purpose of feedback was to point out all my errors. After spending countless hours working on a project, it was difficult not to take critiques personally. I became defensive and wanted to be heard rather than listen to the other side.

As the semesters went by, I observed an interesting trend. The students who grew the most were those who asked questions. Instead of trying to defend their opinions; they really wanted to know the reason why a certain point of view was different from theirs and how it could be improved.

This insight completely changed my perspective.

I started to view feedback as an opportunity to learn. Instead of explaining every decision, I began asking questions of my own. Why would you approach it differently? What could make this stronger? What am I overlooking? I realized that every person brought a different perspective, and each conversation gave me the chance to think in a new way.

That shift didn't just make me a better student, it also changed the way I approach learning in every part of my life. Today, I ask questions because I am genuinely curious about how things work and why people make the decisions that they do. I strongly believe that one can grow from learning from others with experience. I no longer viewed asking questions as a weakness, Instead I began to see them as the bridge between what I knew and what I had yet to discover.

This mindset changed my way in my thinking and made me more confident and open to new challenge. It showed me that one should be ready to accept criticism, listen before responding, and welcome feedback instead of fearing it. Whether I am working on a studio project or beginning a new opportunity, I know I do not need to have all the answers. What matters most is having the willingness to learn.

Looking back, I know I will not remember every project I designed or every critique I received. What I will remember are the lesson that those moments taught me, that growth develops when we stop trying to prove ourselves and start being open minded to learn. This principle does not only define how I am in school, but defines me in life as well. And I hope to always remain curious, because curiosity is what transforms feedback into growth.
