How religious freedom changed my understanding of History by CALEB - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
When I started researching the separation of church and state, one question made me curious why would a government want to force people to follow a religion they did not believe in? began thinking about how people in the past did not always have the freedom to practice their faith, and how the government had so much control over personal choices. One example that caught my attention happened in Virginia during the during the 18 century, when some Baptist preachers were put in jail for preaching without the permission required by law. I thought this was unfair because they were sharing their beliefs, not forcing anyone else to believe the same. It surprised me that people could be punished for that. I believe everyone should have the freedom to choose their religion without being afraid of punishment. As I continued researching, I learned about James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, who worked to protect religious freedom and prevent the government from controlling people's beliefs. This made me see history differently. It's not just about dates or famous names; It's about dates or famous names it's about real people who lived through unfair situations, and about how those struggles shaped the freedoms we have today. Thinking about it that way helped me understand the subject as something connected to everyday life.
