Skill Development by Bryan - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

A skill I hope I can develop is being able to manage my money. money management is more than a simple task it's a part of life that provides a blueprint for the future and secures your life. Over the next few years, I hope I can develop this skill and be aware of my financial situation and growth.
My first step focuses on meticulous tracking. For the next six months, I will record every expense using a budgeting app. The goal is to identify "spending leaks"—those small, recurring costs that drain capital without providing value. By establishing a clear baseline of my needs versus wants, I will build the habit of intentionality, ensuring that my money is a tool for my goals rather than a source of mystery.
In the second phase, I will shift toward automated discipline. I plan to treat my savings like a non-negotiable bill. By setting up automatic transfers to a high-yield savings account on payday, I remove the "temptation gap." This phase is about building an emergency fund that covers three to six months of expenses, providing a psychological safety net that allows me to make career and life decisions from a place of strength rather than desperation.
Finally, the long-term stage involves investment literacy. I will dedicate time each week to learning about compound interest, index funds, and tax-advantaged accounts. Money management matures when you move from saving to growing. By the end of this period, my goal is to have a diversified portfolio where my capital works as hard for me as I do for it.
