Building Blocks by Brooklyn - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
When we are young we are taught things through the reading of books, teachers hoped we observed the action of the characters hoping we would embody them. So that’s exactly what we did. Some people read Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Hunger Games, Little Women, Twilight, and so many more. We held on to the reality and those characters as if we were going to enter their world. And while all of those books are intriguing I think people learned so much more when younger, I’m not talking about the books you read in high school nor middle school, I mean the books in elementary school. In elementary school you read books like Charlotte's Web that taught us friendship and love. The Very Hungry Caterpillar taught us about growing and changing. The hungry caterpillar is a book that sparks a child's curiosity. Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham taught us to try new things. All of these books were building blocks in my childhood and others. But one character has always stuck with me more than others.
Eloise At The Plaza hotel showed me the importance of imagination, showed me what independence is, and self-confidence. She showed me what adventures are and how much joy they are. Eloise showed me the beauty in chaos and how to change the narrative. Her everlasting confidence has been with me for years.
For as long as I can remember I have been as independent. I have Eloise to thank for that. Growing up my parents were always working, always gone, so what else could I do then be independent? Reading the book I never doubted my capabilities and always put in the effort.
