The Skills to Be Resilient and Perservere by Briyana - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I have seen how the system of justice can be unfair for a person without power, resources, or representation. I have seen people from my community constantly struggle to get fair treatment, and I have had moments in my life when my voice was overlooked. These experiences showed me how easily people can be dismissed and how deeply that affects not only individuals but whole families and neighborhoods. This shaped my commitment to ensuring justice includes everyone.

This is why I will study social justice. I want to be an advocate for small and under-served communities too often forgotten. I want to help create a system that treats everyone fairly and recognizes the humanity in every person. Whether through policy-making, developing community-centered support programs, or directly assisting people in navigating legal challenges, I want to help build solutions grounded in compassion and equity.

To be a truly effective advocate for under-served communities, I realize I need to move beyond just having passion. I need to develop the skill of resilience to handle the setbacks that are sure to happen in this work and the skill of perseverance to stay committed when progress feels slow. Developing these 'mental muscles' now will ensure I can support my community for the long term without burning out".

I have already started preparing for this road through community service and leadership positions in which I support my peers and work to promote inclusive environments. These experiences have enhanced my empathetic nature, my communication skills, and my commitment to serve.

College will provide me with knowledge and exposure to expand this work. The study of criminal justice will allow me a deeper understanding of the system and to learn how change is effected. I also plan to participate in advocacy groups, internships, and service organizations that will put me in contact with others who share my mission.

I am not seeking social justice as just a career, but as a purpose: to help in ensuring that every voice matters.
