Coming out of my Shell by Brianna - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
I never imagined that a job at a jewelry store would teach me one of the most valuable lessons about personal growth: the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone.
I had always been a reserved person by nature, so entering a high-level sales-based role challenged me at first. I was hesitant to approach customers, upsell, and offer the store credit card because I didn't want to pressure people into making decisions. My manager, who I attribute much of my growth to, was patient and encouraging, but also straightforward with me. She helped me realize that I needed to take initiative, push myself outside of my comfort zone, and develop the confidence necessary to achieve my goals.
My manager encouraged me through practice scenarios, quizzing me daily to test my knowledge, and putting me in situations where I had no choice but to utilize my communication and sales skills. I took these experiences as motivation because I genuinely wanted to improve. Although there were moments when I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed, those experiences built me into one of the top-performing employees in my district.
The greatest realization came when I noticed that my success was not solely because of my sales skills, but because of my ability to connect with people. Fear had been holding me back from so many opportunities. When I came out of my shell and learned to genuinely listen, understand, and build relationships with customers, my performance improved. There was no secret to achieving high sales; it came from being authentic and making people feel valued.
This experience changed the way I view feedback and personal growth. I learned that constructive feedback is not criticism, but an opportunity to become better. It taught me to embrace challenges, trust the process, and recognize that stepping outside of my comfort zone can lead to growth I never imagined.
