The Power of Listening by Brianna - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from feedback came during my CNA clinical training. Early in my training, my instructor noticed that while I was completing tasks correctly, I was often so focused on the technical aspects of patient care that I did not always take the time to fully engage with patients. She encouraged me to slow down, communicate more, and remember that patients need compassion just as much as they need quality care.

At first, I was nervous because I wanted to do everything perfectly, and I thought efficiency was the most important part of the job. However, I realized that healthcare is about much more than completing a checklist. It is about making people feel heard, respected, and comfortable, especially when they may be scared or vulnerable.

I took my instructor's feedback seriously. I began introducing myself more confidently, explaining what I was doing before providing care, listening more carefully to patients' concerns, and making an effort to build trust through simple conversations. As I practiced these changes, I noticed that patients became more comfortable, and I felt more confident in my own abilities. I learned that accepting constructive feedback is not a sign of failure but an opportunity to become better.

This experience changed the way I approach learning. Instead of viewing feedback as criticism, I now see it as a valuable tool for growth. Whether I am in the classroom, during clinical training, or working toward my future career as a diagnostic medical sonographer, I actively seek opportunities to improve. I understand that success comes from being willing to learn, adapt, and continuously develop both technical skills and compassion.

That lesson has stayed with me because it taught me that growth begins with humility. By embracing feedback with an open mind, I have become a more confident student, a more compassionate caregiver, and a better future healthcare professional.
