Play with a Purpose by Braeden - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

One small habit that has made a significant difference in my personal and academic achievement is beginning to play worship songs on drums. At first, it was simply about honing my abilities and becoming a part of something significant via music. I appreciated the beat, the intensity, and the sense of contributing to something larger than myself. But, over time, performing worship music became more than simply drum practice; it became a gateway to something deeper.
As I studied and performed more worship songs, I became more attentive to the words. I recognized that if I was going to play this music on purpose, I needed to comprehend the meaning behind it. My curiosity naturally drove me to read the Bible more frequently. What began as occasional reading to help me grasp the music gradually evolved into a regular practice. Rather than simply hearing Scripture in music, I wanted to see it for myself and grasp it in context.
Reading my Bible gradually became something I wanted to do rather than something I "had" to do. It became part of my daily habit. Whether it's in the morning before school or before bed, taking that time allows me to recharge, reflect, and remain grounded. It provides me clarity when I'm anxious and direction when I'm unsure.
This tiny difference — from simply playing praise music to actively interacting with the message behind it has had a significant influence on my life. It has increased my discipline, sharpened my attention, and shaped my ideals. Academically, it has helped me maintain consistency and calmness under pressure. Personally, it has given me a greater feeling of purpose.
What began as a simple musical habit evolved into a daily spiritual practice that now shapes who I am and how I approach life.
