Uneven Equations by bella - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

Math has always been hard for me, I knew that going into this year. My teacher last year told me not to continue in the high math classes. I did anyway. My math teacher I had for the first half of this year told me not to double up in math. I did anyway. My math teacher for the last half of this year would speak about my poor math ability in front of the whole class, even when I wasn’t there. Math was never a good subject for me, and the teachers didn’t make it easier. When it got confusing, I couldn’t even find support or help from my teachers. Every night, balancing school and club sports with teaching myself math would come as a struggle, putting a damper on my whole perception of school. It may have looked like a minor misunderstanding of the subject from the outside, but from an inside perspective, I felt trapped. There was no source of help, and the only one I could rely on was myself. My difficulty in math has only taught me to be resilient, and learn that when I have no one, I’m always able to count on myself.
