Beyond the Game: The Power of Sports Media and Representation by Bailey - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

One subject that has sparked my curiosity is the impact sports media has on how people experience sports and who they believe belongs in the industry. As a Sportscasting student at Full Sail University, I have become increasingly interested in how broadcasters, reporters, and content creators do more than simply share scores and statistics. They tell stories, create connections with audiences, and influence how athletes are remembered.

My interest in this subject has also grown through my experience coaching youth softball. Working with young athletes has shown me that sports are about much more than winning and losing. They teach confidence, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. It has made me think about how the stories we tell about athletes can influence the next generation, especially young girls who are looking for role models in sports.

This curiosity has encouraged me to look more closely at the representation of women in sports broadcasting and sports journalism. I want to understand how visibility, storytelling, and access to opportunities affect the way audiences view women in sports. Seeing women succeed as sideline reporters, play-by-play broadcasters, and studio analysts has reinforced my belief that there is a place for women in every part of the sports industry.

Through my coursework, including writing scripts, recording voiceovers, conducting interviews, and participating in studio broadcasts, I have begun to understand how much research and preparation go into communicating a story effectively. Even a short highlight package requires thoughtful decisions about which facts to include, which moments matter most, and how to make the information meaningful to an audience.

This exploration has deepened my understanding of sports media by showing me that effective broadcasting requires more than enthusiasm for the game. It takes curiosity, accuracy, preparation, and an awareness of the people behind the statistics. It has also strengthened my desire to use my future career to tell compelling stories and help create more opportunities for women in sports media.

Ultimately, what began as a lifelong love of sports has developed into a deeper interest in the responsibility broadcasters have to inform, connect, and inspire. I want to become the kind of sports broadcaster who not only helps fans feel closer to the game but also inspires the next generation to believe they belong in it.
