Finding Me by Bailee - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, my childhood was shaped by responsibilities that most children my age never had to face. My parents struggled with narcotic use, which meant that stability and guidance were often missing from our home. Because of this, I was forced to step into a role far beyond what a ten year old should be doing. By the age of ten, I became a caregiver not by choice, but by necessity.

I took on the responsibilities of raising my younger brother and sister. I made sure they were fed, bathed, and dressed for the school day. I helped them with their homework, comforted them when they were scared, and did my best to provide a sense of normalcy. While other children were focused on playing on a playground and school activities, I was learning how to manage a household and care for others. This early responsibility was overwhelming at times, but it also taught me discipline, compassion, and resilience.

Through these experiences, I discovered a strength within myself that I did not know existed. Being forced to grow up so quickly shaped who I am today. Although my childhood was difficult, it gave me perseverance and empathy that continues to guide me through life and shape who I am today and the future nurse that I will be.
