Finding Strength Through Change by Ayana - January 2026 Scholarship Essay
There was a moment during my senior year of high school when everything I thought was stable in my life suddenly changed. My family situation shifted unexpectedly, and my mother and I had to start over while I was preparing for graduation and planning for college. At a time when I was supposed to be celebrating milestones and looking ahead with certainty, I was forced to confront uncertainty head-on. It was during this period that I discovered a strength I did not know I possessed: resilience.
Before this experience, I believed strength meant having everything planned out and under control. I had always worked hard academically and stayed involved in school, but I had never been tested in a way that required me to rebuild while still moving forward. Suddenly, I was balancing emotional stress, academic responsibilities, and major life decisions all at once. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, and giving up would have been the easier option. Instead, I learned how to adapt.
What surprised me most was my ability to remain focused even when circumstances were unpredictable. I continued to push myself academically, knowing that my education would be a pathway to stability and opportunity. I also learned how to advocate for myself asking questions, seeking guidance, and taking responsibility for my future even when the path was unclear. This experience taught me that resilience is not about avoiding hardship, but about continuing to grow through it.
This newfound strength influenced how I approached college and leadership opportunities. As a first-generation college student, I entered higher education knowing that challenges would arise, but I no longer feared them. I became more confident in stepping into leadership roles, supporting others, and taking initiative. My resilience allowed me to stay organized, committed, and motivated even during demanding periods, whether balancing academics, leadership responsibilities, or personal growth.
Additionally, this experience shaped how I connect with others. Having faced a difficult transition, I became more empathetic and intentional about building community. I understand the importance of feeling supported, especially during times of change. This has motivated me to be someone others can rely on, whether through leadership roles, mentorship, or simply offering encouragement. I have learned that strength grows when it is shared, and that perseverance can inspire others to keep going.
Looking back, the moment that once felt like a setback became a turning point. It revealed a level of determination and resilience that continues to guide my decisions today. I now approach challenges with confidence, knowing that I am capable of adapting, learning, and pushing forward. This strength has not only helped me succeed academically, but has also shaped the person I am becoming someone who faces adversity with courage, purpose, and a commitment to growth.
