As a graphic design student, I have learned that taking criticism is an important part of becoming a better designer. Throughout my design classes, we have had many feedback days where we show our work to our classmates and professors and receive opinions about what is working and what could be improved. At first, receiving criticism about something I had spent hours working on could be difficult. It is easy to become attached to your own ideas and immediately want to explain why you made something a certain way. Over time, however, I learned that feedback is not meant to tear down my work. It gives me another perspective that I would not have been able to see on my own.
Now, whenever I receive feedback, I make sure to write down notes about what people say, even when I do not immediately agree with their opinion. I consider each suggestion and think about how it could apply to my work. Sometimes I make the change exactly as it was suggested, while other times the feedback makes me think of a completely different solution. Either way, I have learned that there is always something I can take away from another person's perspective.
This has changed the way I approach both design and learning. I no longer see criticism as someone telling me that my work is wrong. Instead, I see it as another opportunity to improve. Design is meant to communicate with other people, so understanding how someone else sees my work is just as important as understanding what I intended when I created it. Learning to listen to feedback has made me more open-minded, willing to make changes, and comfortable knowing that my first idea does not always have to be my final one.
