Learning Beyond My Comfort Zone by Asheia - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
When people think about feedback, they often imagine a teacher marking up a paper or a supervisor giving advice at work. For me, the most meaningful feedback did not come in the form of words. It came through my experiences in college. Sometimes life gives us feedback by showing us the results of our choices, and that realization completely changed how I approach learning and personal growth.
When I first started college, I stayed within my comfort zone. I came to school with a group of friends, and for the first two years, they were almost the only people I interacted with outside of class. I attended events with them, studied with them, and rarely made an effort to branch out. As someone who also owns a small hair business, I had no problem communicating with clients. I could build professional relationships, make people feel comfortable in my chair, and provide great customer service. However, I kept those relationships professional. I never allowed myself to form new friendships because I was already comfortable with the people I knew.
Eventually, things changed. One by one, my friends stopped attending school. Some transferred, while others decided to pursue different paths. Suddenly, the comfort I had relied on was gone. At first, I felt alone and unsure of how to navigate campus without the people I had always depended on. That experience became the feedback I needed. It showed me that I had unintentionally limited myself by staying in the same circle for so long.
Instead of continuing to isolate myself, I have decided to challenge myself to meet new people and participate in activities I normally would have avoided. I started introducing myself to classmates, joining conversations, and being open to working with different people on assignments. While it was uncomfortable at first, I have realized that growth rarely happens when we stay in familiar places. Every new interaction has taught me something about communication, collaboration, and confidence.
This experience also made me reflect on the opportunities I may have missed. I often think about the “what ifs.” What if I had attended more campus events? What if I had networked with more students in my major? What if I had built relationships with people who could have inspired me or challenged me to think differently? While I cannot change the past, I have learned that dwelling on missed opportunities does not create new ones. The best thing I can do is learn from them.
That lesson has influenced every part of my life. As a business owner studying business in college, I now understand that relationships are just as valuable as knowledge. Success is not only about what you know but also about the people you meet, the conversations you have, and the willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. I have become more intentional about networking, participating in class, and embracing new experiences instead of avoiding them.
Looking back, I realize that the greatest feedback I received came from my own circumstances. They taught me that comfort can sometimes become a barrier to growth. I have learned to accept the past without regret and focus on preparing for the future with a more open mindset. College has become more than a place to earn a degree, it has become a place where I am learning how to build connections, embrace change, and become the kind of leader I hope to be. Those lessons will continue to shape both my personal growth and my future career long after graduation.
