A Helping Hand by Ariel - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
One time I helped someone in a meaningful way was during high school in my algebra class. A girl in my class was really struggling and she kept saying she just did not get math. We had a big test coming up and she looked stressed every single day. She told me she felt dumb and like she was always going to fail math no matter how hard she tried. I could tell it was not just about the test. It was hurting her confidence.
I asked her if she wanted to study together after school. At first I thought I would just show her how to solve the problems and that would be it. But when we started working, I realized she did not just need the answers. She needed someone to slow down and explain it in a simple way. So we went step by step. We practiced basic equations first before moving to harder ones. I would ask her to try one on her own, and if she got stuck, we would figure it out together. When she got something right, even something small, I told her she was doing good.
After a few days of studying, she started to understand it more. She was still nervous about the test, but she was not saying she was dumb anymore. When we got our test grades back, she passed. She was so happy and told me she finally felt like she could actually do math.
From that experience, I learned that I am more patient than I thought. I also learned that helping someone is not about being the smartest person in the room. It is about taking time and caring enough to help. I realized I like seeing other people grow and feel proud of themselves. It made me feel good knowing I helped someone believe in themselves again. That showed me that even something simple like helping with algebra can really make a difference.
