The Spirit of Christmas Past a by Anyria - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that feedback is not meant to tell me that I am not good enough. Instead, it is an opportunity to become better. There was a time when I struggled to accept criticism because I often saw feedback as a reflection of my abilities rather than as a chance to improve. Over time, I learned to change the way I viewed feedback, and that change has shaped the way I approach school, challenges, and my personal growth.
A great example, Christmas 2018. I was 10 years old and a “brat”. I whined about losing a word game and, surely, in hindsight I see I was overreacting. When I got overstimulated I gave up. Once everyone left the party my aunt sat me down for a talk. She said I “gave up too much when given multiple directions” and “acted bratty at times”. My uncle and cousin joined in to critique me. I felt so upset sitting there being criticized when I barely did anything wrong. This was an embarrassing moment for me for a long time and it made me self conscious about how I act. Over time I understood that my family wasn’t insulting me, but helping me. Instead of focusing on what I had done wrong, I began thinking about what I could do differently the next time.
That experience taught me that constructive criticism is valuable because it can reveal things about myself that I may not notice on my own. I started asking more questions when I did not understand something and became more willing to revise my work instead of simply accepting the first version I completed. I also learned not to take every correction personally. A mistake does not define my intelligence or potential; it simply shows me where I have room to grow.
