“If you keep going down this road, I’m worried you're going to turn out just like your mother,” were words that my father said to me that completely changed my perspective. My mother has faced challenges with addiction and the law, and for a long time I didn’t realize how many of her mistakes I was beginning to repeat. I often lied, hid things from my parents, and didn’t take responsibility–just as my mother once did. Hearing these words come from my father forced me to see how my actions were leading me down the same path. At that moment, I understood that I could make a different choice. I’m not forced to follow my mothers footsteps, I can create my own path.
To start making a change, I began holding myself accountable, being honest with my parents, and surrounding myself with people who encourage my growth. From this, I learned that leadership is more than just a title; it is the courage to do what is right even when no one is watching. As a captain of my volleyball team for the last three years, I’ve learned what it truly means to lead by example. My coach introduced the acronym TIE: Teamwork, Integrity, and Encouragement– which have become values that have shaped my approach to leadership. I lead with empathy and motivate my teammates to be their best. I’ve seen how small moments of encouragement can build confidence and trust, so I try my best to encourage my teammates as often as I can.
Outside of sports, I carry that same energy into my community. Whether it’s helping classmates understand a difficult lesson, volunteering through student council, or supporting a friend through personal struggles, I strive to be someone others can rely on. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about being in charge–it’s about helping others grow with you.
I will be a first-generation college student, and I will continue building communities through honesty, inclusion, and encouragement. My journey has taught me that leadership grows from resilience and determination. I want to inspire others who have faced difficult family or personal challenges to see that their past does not define them, but it can strengthen them to become the best version of themselves and a leader to others. Leadership to me means creating spaces where everyone feels supported, not just successful.I plan to carry this mindset with me through college and throughout my future.
