My Story of Perseverance and Self-Discovery by Ani - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

While attending high school, I experienced one of the most unimaginable tragedies: I lost both of my parents to domestic violence at the young age of fourteen. Becoming an orphan at the start of high school, a time when every teenager seeks guidance and support from their parental figures, completely changed the course of my life. Although grief often made it difficult to persevere, I refused to allow my hardships to define me. Instead, I challenged myself academically, determined to honor my mother through my education. One of the courses that initially challenged me the most and ultimately transformed the way I think was AP English Literature and Composition. At first, I viewed literature as simply reading stories and identifying literary devices. However, I promptly realized that AP Literature demanded something much deeper.
Every novel, poem, and play required careful analysis, thoughtful interpretation, and the ability to defend an argument utilizing textual evidence. Rather than searching for a single correct answer, I learned to evaluate a multitude of perspectives, recognize subtle patterns, and construct well-supported interpretations. Initially, this level of analysis was intimidating, especially while balancing the emotional weight of my personal circumstances. Yet, it ultimately became one of the most rewarding academic experiences of my high school career. Furthermore, as I grew more confident, AP Literature strengthened my critical thinking by teaching me to ask inquisitive questions rather than accept simplistic conclusions. It rather challenged me to analyze an author's purpose, evaluate complex themes, and support my reasoning with insightful, clear evidence.
I discovered that effective analysis is not simply about finding answers but about understanding the deeper meaning behind them. These skills extended far beyond the classroom, cultivating the way I approach challenges, solve problems, and evaluate the world around me. Additionally, the course also transformed the way I communicate with others. Through analytical essays, class discussions, and close reading, I learned how to organize complex ideas into persuasive arguments while considering opposing viewpoints. These experiences reinforced the importance of careful reasoning and effective communications skills that are essential to my future career in law and dedication to advocacy. Lawyers must examine evidence, interpret information from multiple perspectives to provide nuanced viewpoints and conclusions.
Furthermore, lawyers must advocate persuasively for others. AP Literature provided an early foundation for developing those critical abilities. My experiences outside the classroom further strengthened the significance of these lessons. After the untimely loss of both of my parents at the start of my high school career, I became passionate about advocacy, serving my community through leadership opportunities and my involvement in Love is Respect Week, where I help raise awareness about domestic violence and encourage conversations surrounding healthy relationships. My education has provided me with the confidence to transform my personal experiences into meaningful action, while AP Literature has equipped me with the analytical skills necessary to become a thoughtful and conscientious advocate.
Although AP English Literature and Composition initially challenged me, it ultimately became one of the most valuable courses I have taken. It refined my ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and approach difficult issues with empathy and reason. Ultimately, as I pursue my goal of becoming a lawyer, I know these skills will allow me to advocate for those whose voices often go unheard and create meaningful change within my community, utilizing the critical skills AP Literature afforded me in my high school career.
