My Greatest Challenge by Andres - May 2026 Scholarship Essay
My greatest challenge as a student has been navigating systems that weren't designed with me in mind. As a first-gen student in a dual enrollment program, I had no idea how to do things many students take for granted. Things like applying for financial aid, creating a competitive college application, and advocating for myself were all learned through trial and error. I did this while managing college courses on top of my high school classes.
The academic demands at JCECA were significant. Taking college courses since the age of 14 meant competing and learning alongside students who were older and more prepared. There were moments, especially in STEM courses, where I felt as though I wouldn't be able to keep up. What kept me going was my family's encouragement and reminders that I belong, despite my struggles. At every family cookout, I was showered with encouragement and praise by my family, who met every update with pride. I got help when I needed it, and I helped others whenever I could. Over the next few years with the ECA Peer Tutor's guild, I turned my experience with hard material into something I could offer other students.
Now, as I head to NC State to begin my studies, I look back on the challenges I faced and am thankful for them. Working my way through the problems I faced as a student has given me the courage and determination I need to navigate whatever comes next, including being one of the few first-gen students in NC State's civil engineering program.
