More than Just Rest by Alyssa - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic project that sparked my curiosity and significantly deepened my understanding of a subject was a research investigation into the relationship between sleep and academic performance among high school students. What began as a simple question, "Does getting more sleep actually improve grades?" evolved into a project that changed how I view both scientific research and my own daily habits.
I first became interested in the topic after noticing how often students, including myself, sacrificed sleep to complete assignments or prepare for exams. Many of us believed that staying up late to study would lead to better results. However, I wondered whether the opposite might be true. Instead of relying on assumptions, I wanted to explore what scientific evidence could reveal.
To investigate, I designed a small research project that involved reviewing scientific studies and collecting anonymous survey responses from students about their sleep habits, study routines, and academic performance. As I analyzed the information, I discovered a consistent pattern: students who regularly received adequate sleep tended to report better focus, stronger memory retention, and higher academic achievement. More importantly, I learned that sleep is not simply a period of rest. It plays an active role in memory consolidation, learning, and overall cognitive function.
What fascinated me most was the process of conducting the research itself. I had previously viewed research as simply gathering facts from reliable sources. Through this project, I learned that meaningful research requires asking thoughtful questions, evaluating evidence critically, and remaining open to findings that may challenge existing beliefs. I also discovered the importance of distinguishing between correlation and causation. Although many studies showed a relationship between sleep and academic success, understanding the factors that influence both required careful analysis and skepticism.
The project deepened my understanding of biology, psychology, and data analysis simultaneously. It demonstrated how different academic disciplines can intersect to answer real-world questions. Beyond the classroom, it also encouraged me to reflect on my own habits. I began prioritizing consistent sleep schedules and became more aware of how lifestyle choices affect learning and productivity.
Looking back, this research project was valuable not only because of what I learned about sleep science but also because it strengthened my curiosity and confidence as a learner. It taught me that even everyday experiences can inspire meaningful questions and that the pursuit of answers often leads to unexpected insights. Most importantly, it showed me that knowledge becomes far more meaningful when it is connected to real-life challenges and personal growth.
