From Memorization to Understanding: My Growth Through Microbiology by Alyssa - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that challenged me at first was microbiology. When I first started the course, I expected it to be mostly about memorizing information, but I quickly learned that it required much more than that. Microbiology pushed me to understand how microorganisms affect the human body and why certain processes happen, rather than just memorizing facts for an exam.

At the beginning, I struggled with connecting the different concepts together. Learning about bacteria, immune responses, and how infections develop involved a lot of information, and I had to figure out a study approach that worked best for me. Instead of only focusing on memorizing definitions, I started spending more time understanding the “why” behind each topic and how everything connected. I learned to ask better questions, use different study resources, and break down difficult concepts into smaller parts.

As I continued through the course, microbiology helped me become a stronger critical thinker. It taught me how to analyze information, recognize patterns, and look at problems from different perspectives. I began to understand that in science, there is not always an immediate answer, and sometimes you have to investigate, evaluate the information available, and make connections before reaching a conclusion.

The skills I gained from microbiology have continued to influence my academic journey. As I pursue Health Informatics, I see the importance of being able to analyze information and understand how knowledge can be used to improve healthcare. Although microbiology was challenging at first, it helped me become a more confident and adaptable student. It showed me that challenges are not setbacks, but opportunities to grow and develop skills that will help me succeed in my future career.
