From Challenge to Confidence by Alliandra - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic topic that challenged me at first was anatomy and physiology. As I prepare to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), I quickly realized that learning about the human body required much more than memorization. I had to understand how different body systems work together and how a problem in one system can affect the entire body.
In the beginning, I struggled to remember medical terms and understand complex processes. Instead of giving up, I changed the way I studied by reviewing my notes every day, watching educational videos, and practicing with diagrams and quizzes. Over time, I began to recognize patterns and connect what I was learning to real-life patient care.
This experience strengthened my critical thinking skills because it taught me to analyze information instead of simply memorizing it. I learned to ask questions, think through possible causes of symptoms, and understand why certain treatments are used. These skills will be essential as I care for patients and make thoughtful decisions in my nursing career.
Although anatomy and physiology was one of the most difficult subjects I have faced, overcoming that challenge gave me confidence in my ability to learn, adapt, and succeed. It showed me that persistence and a willingness to approach problems from different angles can turn obstacles into opportunities for growth.
