Staying focused by Allen - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
A small habit that made a big difference in my studies was learning to treat paying attention like a routine. I realized pretty quickly that waiting around for motivation to hit me was wasting even more time, so I built a process that helped me switch into work mode quickly. Before starting any assignment, I would clear off my desk, silence my phone, and get rid of anything that might make me become distracted. Then I would do around twenty uninterrupted minutes of work before even thinking about taking a break. It wasn’t anything dramatic, but it created a mental cue that told my brain it was time to lock in.
Eventually, that routine became second nature. As soon as I set up my space and started on whatever homework I had to complete, the timer, it felt easier to settle into whatever task was in front of me. I wasn’t battling distractions as much, and I stopped wasting energy trying to sort of get ready to study. Those short, focused intervals added up, and I noticed I was finishing assignments faster and with a lot less stress. All of this sort of started as a small habit, turned into one of the most reasonable ways for me to stay organized, stay calm, and actually get my work done without feeling overwhelmed and trying to procrastinate.
