The Power of Walking in Purpose by Aliyah - July 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I could give one pice of advice to my past self, it would be this: you do not have to shrink yourself to make others feel comfortable. You do not have to seek validation from people who fail to recognize your worth. Your value is not tied to anyone’s approval, attention, or opinions. It’s rooted in who you are.
Growing up, I spent so much time trying to fit in, trying to be accepted, and explaining myself in spaces that were never meant for me. I wasted energy second guessing my abilities, overthinking my decisions, and doubting my worth because of other peoples perspectives. If I had known back then what I know now, I would have walked confidently in my uniqueness, knowing that the right people, the right opportunities, and the right doors would open when I stayed true to myself.
I’ve learned that through experience, especially through my journey as a student athlete- that walking in your purpose does not mean everyone will understand you, but it does mean you will find peace knowing you are becoming who you were always meant to be. I would tell my past self to embrace standing out, to take pride in being different and to trust that your plan is bigger than any opinion. You are a strong, phenomenal woman, and the world needs you to show up fully and unapologetically as yourself.
