One academic topic that challenged me the most was heat transfer in my chemical engineering coursework. At first, I struggled to understand how conduction, convection, and radiation worked together in real world systems. The equations were complex, and I found it difficult to determine which principles applied to different engineering problems. Simply memorizing formulas was not enough I had to understand the reasoning behind them.
Beyond the coursework itself, another challenge was walking into class and realizing I was the only Black woman in the room. While my classmates were respectful, there were moments when I felt the pressure of knowing that I stood out. I often felt that I had to work twice as hard to prove that I belonged in the classroom and that I was just as capable as everyone else. That feeling became motivation. Instead of allowing self-doubt to define me, I used it as fuel to prepare more, study longer, ask questions, and refuse to let difficult material discourage me. I wanted my work ethic and performance to speak for themselves.
As I continued practicing problems, attending office hours, and learning from my mistakes, I began to recognize patterns and connect the mathematical concepts to real-world engineering applications. I stopped focusing on simply finding the correct answer and started understanding why the answer made sense. That shift changed the way I approached not only engineering but every challenge I encountered.
Overcoming this experience strengthened my critical thinking skills because it taught me to think analytically, remain resilient under pressure, and trust my abilities even when I questioned myself. It also taught me that persistence is often more important than perfection. Every difficult assignment, exam, and late night of studying reminded me that I earned my place in engineering through determination and hard work.
As I continue pursuing chemical engineering, I hope my journey encourages other young Black women to enter STEM fields with confidence. Representation matters because seeing someone who looks like you succeed can make a goal feel attainable. I want my success to demonstrate that barriers do not have to define our future. Instead, they can become the very obstacles that shape our strength, our character, and our determination to create opportunities for those who come after us.
