Academic Challenges by Alexander - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

An academic topic that really challenged me was English. I struggled in English because I thought it was boring and I struggled with brainstorming ideas for all the essays I had to write. I struggled putting ideas on the paper because I would overthink a lot and would end up usually giving up. I also had trouble organizing my essays and making sure that everything was where it was supposed to be.

When I would write essays, I would be so stressed. I would procrastinate a lot and wait until the last minute to actually start working on them because I was too lazy to do it. I would always rush to finish my essays, and the grade would usually reflect that. When I would see these results, it finally came to me that I needed to do better and try harder on my essays and in English as a whole.

Over time, English helped me with my critical thinking skills. At first, I couldn't think of a topic that I would write about, but then I was able to think about many topics. I learned to kind of have fun while writing my essays because I can come up with so many thoughts and just put them down on the paper. Now even though I would write many thoughts down on the paper, I would still back them up with facts and evidence, two things essays should always have.

Even though English challenged me at first, I learned to make the best with what I have and now I average an A in that class for the last five years. English has taught me how to think carefully, brainstorm, how to organize essays, different reading skills, and so much more. English is one of the most important subjects we have because it helps us as people to articulate ourselves so much better.
