Strength in shared recovery by Alejandro - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
At the start of my senior year, I walked into a new class where I didn’t know a single soul. While I usually consider myself someone who makes friends easily, being surrounded by younger students I didn’t recognize felt intimidating. I sat at a table with a group of boys whose names I didn't yet know, but as the semester progressed, these strangers became close friends. A bond grew stronger with one of them through an unexpected near career-ending injury. One morning, this friend walked into class on crutches. He shared the story of how he had suffered an ACL tear during a basketball game in the off season. Hearing his story, I felt a connection. I explained to him that I had endured the exact same injury during a heated soccer match at the end of my sophomore year. That injury had me out for 8 months, this period challenged me not just physically, but mentally. Sharing my recovery journey gave him a much needed confidence boost. I stepped into a role where I offered him tips on physical recovery and encouraged him to reach out whenever he needed to. As he updated me on his physical therapy progress, I truly saw myself in him, he was walking the same path I had gone through two years ago. I felt a sense of pride being one of his supporters, knowing how hard it is to find motivation when your body isn't at 100%. Our connection grew when he opened up to me about his mental health. He admitted he was struggling, which made me think of the hard moments I had entered during my own recovery. To keep him motivated, I texted him almost every day to ensure he was staying on top of his exercises while at home. By the end of the semester, we stopped sharing a class, but I kept the bond with the texting. I felt a deep responsibility for his progress, knowing that if he gave up on himself, I would feel like I had failed him. Today, he is finally running and moving again. This experience was profoundly meaningful for me. Helping a friend through his hardest moments allowed me to look back on my own journey and see how far I’ve come with the support of my family and friends. I’ve learned that I am driven by hard work and resilience, and I discovered a quiet passion for helping others with their battles.
