Solving More Than Problems by Aiyara - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

When I think about geometry, I remember my notebook more than anything else. Its pages were crowded with triangles, circles, and erased pencil marks that never seemed to disappear completely. Some diagrams were covered in arrows pointing from one angle to another, while others ended halfway through because I had no idea what came next. By the end of each class, the pages looked messy, but they reflected exactly how I felt trying to make sense of something that never seemed to fit together.

Geometry was not new to me. I had first encountered it in eighth grade, but it was never my strongest subject. While I understood the basics, I often found myself struggling to see the connections between concepts. When I entered ninth grade, those small gaps in my understanding became much larger. Suddenly, geometry was no longer about recognizing shapes or memorizing formulas. It asked me to explain why something was true, to defend every conclusion with evidence, and to trust a process that rarely made sense to me.

The hardest part was writing proofs. I would stare at a problem for several minutes, convinced everyone else knew where to begin, while I was still searching for the first step. Even when I arrived at the correct answer, my reasoning often fell apart somewhere in the middle. I skipped details that seemed obvious to me or relied on the wrong theorem without realizing it. Each mistake reminded me that knowing the answer was different from understanding it.

Over time, I realized I was approaching geometry the wrong way. I was trying to memorize instead of understanding. So, I slowed down. I began drawing cleaner diagrams, breaking problems into smaller pieces, and reviewing my mistakes instead of rushing past them. I started asking questions when I was confused, even when I worried they were stupid. What changed most was not my grade but the way I approached problems. Geometry taught me that understanding rarely comes all at once. It is built patiently, one step leading to another, until something that seemed impossible begins to make sense. I became more comfortable sitting with uncertainty instead of immediately looking for an answer. Rather than seeing mistakes as proof that I was incapable, I started viewing them as part of the process of learning.

Looking back, geometry challenged me in ways I did not expect. It demanded patience and discipline. More importantly, it strengthened my critical thinking by teaching me to question my assumptions, support my conclusions, and approach problems with careful reasoning instead of guessing. The diagrams that once filled my notebook with confusion now remind me that growth is rarely neat. Sometimes it looks like crossed-out lines, unfinished ideas, and starting over. And sometimes, those messy pages become the clearest evidence of how much you have learned.
