One academic topic that challenged me the most was cybersecurity. Before enrolling in my bachelor's program, I had no background in information technology or computer science. My previous career was in the beauty industry as a hairstylist, so learning about networks, operating systems, programming concepts, and cyber threats felt overwhelming. At first, I struggled to understand technical terminology and how different systems worked together to protect information. There were times when I questioned whether I had chosen the right career path.

As my courses progressed, I realized that success in cybersecurity is not just about memorizing technical concepts—it requires critical thinking and problem-solving. Many assignments involved analyzing security incidents, identifying vulnerabilities, and determining the most effective way to respond to cyber threats. I learned to approach problems by gathering evidence, evaluating multiple possible solutions, and making decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. This way of thinking was very different from anything I had done in my previous career.

One of the biggest turning points was completing hands-on labs that required configuring virtual machines, working with Linux and Windows servers, and using cybersecurity tools to investigate potential threats. These assignments taught me that mistakes are part of the learning process. Instead of becoming discouraged when something did not work correctly, I learned to troubleshoot systematically, research reliable sources, and test different solutions until I found the correct answer.

Studying cybersecurity has also improved my ability to think analytically in everyday situations. I have become more comfortable breaking large problems into smaller, manageable steps and considering the potential consequences of different decisions. These skills have helped me become more patient, detail-oriented, and confident in my ability to solve complex problems.

Although cybersecurity was initially the most difficult subject I had ever studied, it has become one of the most rewarding. It challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop resilience, and strengthen my critical thinking skills. Most importantly, it showed me that determination and a willingness to learn can overcome a lack of experience. Those lessons will continue to benefit me throughout my education and future career.
