What I Would Tell my Past Self by Aidan - July 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I could give my past self one piece of advice, it would be to reach out more to the people I hold close to me. I’ve lost a lot of friendships over the years due to a lack of communication on my part. It’s a habit that started when I was young and that has followed me well into my teenage years. If I had to guess why I do it, I’d say it’s a combination of laziness and me being scared that I’m not interesting or “cool” enough to maintain a long term friendship outside of school. Don’t get me wrong; I’m very grateful for the friendships that I have managed to keep throughout the years. It’s just weird when, for instance, I’m walking in the hallways and I see someone I used to be so close with, and we don’t say a word to each other. It makes me think about all the potential memories I missed out on. So, in conclusion, I would tell my past self to be a good friend and just pick up the phone to check on his friends. It never hurts to give your friends a phone call from time to time.
