More Than a language by Agbor - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

When I first started learning American Sign Language (ASL) in high school, I thought it would be just another language class. L quickly realized it was much more difficult than I expected. Instead of relying on spoken words, I had to communicate through hand signs, facial expressions, and body language. At first, I struggled to remember signs, keep up with conversations, and express myself without speaking. It was frustrating because I wasn't used to thinking in such a different way.

As I continue practicing, I realized that ASL was teaching me more than a new language. It challenged me to slow down, observe carefully, and think critically about communication. I learned that understanding someone isn't just about hearing words it's about paying attention to every detail. I had to analyze context, interpret expressions, and adjust my communication based on the situation. These skills improved my ability to solve problems and think from different perspectives.

One of the biggest lessons I Learned was patience. Progress didn't happen overnight, and I made many mistakes along the way. Instead of giving up, I practiced consistently and asked questions whenever I was confused. Over time, I became more confident and realized that challenges are opportunities to grow. Every mistake helped me became a better learner and a better communicator.

This experience has influenced the way I approach other academic subjects and my future career in nursing. Nurses must think critically, communicate clearly, and understand patients from many different backgrounds. Learning ASL showed me that listening goes beyond hearing words It requires empathy, observation, and
careful thinking. What began experiences of my education.

Today, I appreciate that difficult subjects can push us to grow in ways we never expect. ASL not only strengthened my critical thinking skills but also taught me the importance of patience, persistence, and understanding others. Those lessons will continue to guide me throughout college and in my future career.
