Domestic Violence Against Young Men by Adrienne - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

For a Human Services class, we had to choose a topic about something happening in the United States or in our state, Nevada. Our group chose to research domestic violence against men, including young men. We chose this topic because I feel that men do not always get enough attention or get heard. People sometimes assume that the woman is innocent or right without knowing what is happening behind closed doors in a relationship. At the end of the day, both perspectives should be considered when looking at a case or problem.
Therefore, men go to jail for nothing or are put on child support for nothing, and when they try to be heard, they are not heard. Men should have a voice and be able to speak up about what is happening in their relationships, including if they are being stalked or threatened. It is not always women who are stalked or threatened. Men can experience these situations too. I also learned that nearly 56% of men who were victims of contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner first experienced these or other forms of violence by that partner before age 25.
Additionally, it’s not just about men and women. Domestic violence can happen in same sex relationships, including between two men or two women. Some people may think that couples in same sex relationships do not experience these types of situations, but they can happen. Abuse can lead to serious problems, and a person may not want to speak up or call anyone because they are afraid of what might happen.
In conclusion, researching different cases, learning whom to call, and finding support groups in the United States, including Nevada, made this project meaningful to me. I believe we were able to share our project with other people so they could reflect on the research we gathered and consider what they could do in the future. I am very grateful that I got to do this project and help men in general be heard. I want people to know that they do not have to be afraid to speak up about what they are going through. There are support groups that can help people, support them, and let them grow while understanding that they are not alone.
